Today I went shopping with my friend, while we were walking across the street, a graceful lady was wanting to give us a drive, then a gentleman was telling us the same thing as well a little bit later.

I don't know them at all, so do they.
As a result of their warm behavior, I was feeling happy and indebted.
As to/for my friend, she can't speak English much.

No matter we are foreigners or new immigrants, we'd better attach importance to learn the local language, and try our best to merge into the majority.

Somehow, my friend feels like that she can live without learning English in Chinatown in Los Angeles or San Francisco in the future, so learning English is all the same/meaningless to her.
Thinking of many new Chinese immigrants are analogous to her.

And yet, I don't agree with them at all.
As often as not, a majority of new immigrants can't get a good job if they can't speak local language very well.
At least, that's how it looks as a whole.
As opposed to that, the rest of new immigrants who are good at local language are going to live easily and more comfortable.

PS:
The 1990 Census revealed that “a majority of
immigrants from each of the fifteen most common countries of origin spoke English ‘well’ or ‘very well’ after ten years of residence.”
